MILK MONEY

Milk Money is a program that helps to provide locally-sourced and ethically-produced milk to school lunchrooms.  Through our partnership with Hudson Valley Fresh Dairy, and with the generous support of our donors, we are able to supply schools with fresh, quality milk at a subsidized price of only five cents per carton.  So far, we have been able to provide nutrient-rich Hudson Valley milk to around 25,000 students spread across a dozen different school districts.

We only partner with farms that meet our high ethical standards.  That means that the Milk Money program is not only replacing cartons of industrially-produced, often untraceable milk on students’ trays.  Every dollar also goes to support a local independent dairy operation that pays its workers a fair living wage.  We think of it as reinvesting in our own community.

We also think that transparency in food production is essential.  The milk provided to students through our Milk Money program goes from “Cow-to-kid” in 36 hours.  In other words, it is produced, transported, and consumed all in one area code.  When a supply chain is localized and made visible, it encourages the formation of thoughtful consumption habits — the kind of habits upon which thoughtful growers and producers depend.  We believe that it is never too early to start thinking about where your food comes from.
